THE SOUL OF THE SUNFLOWER by Sara Jewett
The warm sun kissed the earthTo consecrate thy birth,And from his close embraceThy radiant faceSprang into sight,A blossoming delight.
Through the long summer daysThy lover's burning raysShone hot upon thy heart.Thy life was partOf his desire,Thou passion-flower of fire!
And, turning toward his love,Lifting thy head aboveThe earth that nurtured thee,Thy majestyAnd stately mienProclaims thee sun-crowned queen.
On earth, thy gorgeous bloomBears record of thy tomb,And to transcendent lightThy soul takes flightTill thou art one,O sunflower, with the sun!
