FRENCH PROVINCE - VILLAGE - LA ROQUE GAGEAC

La Roque-Gageac is a village located in the Aquitaine region. The village is part of the association of the most beautiful villages in France. La Roque-Gageac is located along the Dordogne River, 8 kilometers southwest of Sarlat-la-Canéda.

People appeared here in primitive times. They left a memory of themselves on the stones with carvings.

In the Middle Ages, La Roque Gageac had 1,500 inhabitants. At that time, mostly fishermen lived. The village of Tarda is surrounded by a round tower in this village. Here lived the Italian Giovanni Tarde, a nerd, a friend of Galileo. The estate was still built in the 12th century. During the Hundred Years War, the village suffered a bit, but the castle still challenges the times.

On January 17, 1957, part of the cliff falls on the village of La Roque-Gageac, destroying six houses and a barn, blocking the road. Three people died. On January 9, 2010, part of the cliff fell again at home. June 3, 2010 at the beginning of the tourist season, there was a threat of a fall of 320 tons of rocks hanging over the village. People were evacuated and nets were pulled onto the rocks. After the work done at La Roque-Gageac was reopened on July 10, 2010, and people were able to return home. But still there remains the danger of a rock fall.

The Village has its own special microclimate because of the rock that obscures this province from the north winds. This allows tropical plants to grow right on the street, which creates a special charm to this place.

The most impressive building here is the Château de la Malartrie at the western end of the village of La Roque-Gageac. This is one of the latest buildings in the village, it was built in the 19th century.
